The Dead Sea

Just 34 miles (55km) from Amman and at 1,306ft below sea level, the Dead Sea lies at the lowest point on Earth. As its name suggests, the sea is devoid of all life, due to an extremely high content of salts and minerals. But it is these natural elements which give the waters their famous curative powers, first recognized by Herod the Great over two thousand years ago.

Dead Sea mud contains sulphur, zinc oxide and magnesium carbonate, which are considered to be very good for the skin and the sea's warm waters are beneficial for arthritis sufferers and for those with circulatory problems. Bathers will discover that it is impossible to sink in the thick, briny water, which is four times as salty as regular sea water.

The road from Amman to Kerak, along the King's Highway runs parallel to the Dead Sea's eastern shore and a good view of the sea can be obtained from various points along the route.
