Before the Gulf War, many reptile species were found in Kuwait: various lizards, house geckoes and naturally snakes. Representing mammals were gerbils, jerboas, desert hares and foxes. Insects were abundant including crickets, dragonflies, sometimes locusts and of course the ubiquitous cockroach. The Arachnid family was well represented by scorpions and spiders.
Although only a few birds are native to Kuwait, the Emirate and its islands are an important stopping point on the migratory routes of many birds. Commonly seen birds at various times of the year include hoopoes, eagles, cormorants and terns.
