Rules of the road

Cars drive on the right of the road. Unless you are familiar with traffic conditions in other crowded Middle Eastern capitals, driving in Lebanon is not recommended. Local drivers are used to the chaotic conditions and the once-good road system now in need of repair, but visitors can find driving in cities a frustrating experience, with traffic jams caused by vehicles stopping anywhere on the road without warning.
The mountain roads are dangerous with lots of narrow hairpin bends, and on the highways drivers zigzag in and out of the lanes at hair-raising speeds. Drivers often overtake on hidden bends and pedestrians haphazardly cross the road wherever they want.
