Oman's road network is well developed, particularly along the Gulf of Oman coast, where a highway connects Muscat with Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Another major highway connects northern Oman and Salalah in Dhofar. However, an increasing numbers of Omanis use cars.
The Oman National Transport Company (ONAT) operates inter-city buses providing daily services to the main provincial towns. The main bus terminal is in Ruwi (Muscat) and complete timetables for all routes are posted there. Within Muscat, ONAT's routes cover the city fairly well.
Tickets for inter-city services are available in advance in Muscat but reservations are accepted only for the express services to Salalah. It is a good idea to book these tickets a day or two in advance. The buses to Salalah are luxury air-conditioned coaches which charge OR10 one-way and OR18 return. The trip takes about 12 hours. Charges to other provincial cities are not more than OR4 each way.
There is an international bus service from Muscat to Dubai with twice-daily departures. The trip takes about 6 hours and the fare is OR9 one-way and OR16 return.
