Renting a car in the Sultanate is easy, but not cheap. Most foreign driving licenses are accepted for people visiting Oman on tourist or business visas.
Rates for small cars range from OR10 to OR14 per day, plus OR2 or OR3 for insurance. A week's rental will cost about OR90 to OR100. Seat belt use is mandatory, with a fine for non-compliance of OR10. In general, traffic laws are enforced strictly, especially in Muscat.
There are various car rental agencies in both Muscat and Salalah, and also at larger hotels and at the airports in both cities.
Muscat has a good selection of car hire companies; both international and local companies offer competitive hire rates and a wide choice of cars’ models. Major car hire companies operating international offices in other countries can often arrangements in advance for a car to be available at your destination when you get to Oman. Alternatively, self-drive car hire or chauffeured limousine services can be arranged either through the information desks at Seeb airport or offices, or at major hotels in Muscat. Rates are variable depending on the type of vehicle and the rent period.
