Compulsory military service for 18 months for men between the ages of 18 and 40 was in force until the early 1990s. In the late 1980s the army had a force of some 61,300; the navy, 1,200; and the air force, 2,500. Since the overthrow of Muhammad Siad Barre in January 1990, there have been no national armed forces.
