Fishing provides for local consumption, with a surplus for export. In the late 1980s about 17,000 metric tons of fish were caught annually. Tuna is now being processed and a potential for the export of lobsters exists.
As with all of the country's industries, the fishing industry suffered considerably during Somalia's civil war.
