Lying near the junction of three of the world's zoological zones, the UAE provides a stopover for thousands of species of birds on their annual migrations from north to south.
Studies over the past two decades have shown that the variety of bird-life in the UAE is increasing year by year. Over 400 species have been recorded; most of them are migrants. In fact, because of the attractive environment, many species are now staying the winter. Several million migrating birds pass across the lower Gulf annually, making it one of the most important "flyways" in the world.
The number of species of birds that breed in the country has increased as well. Established migratory patterns are slowly altered to take advantage of the country's new lushness. Over 80 species are now breeding locally and more are being added every year. An unusual and unexpected result of the interest in bird life in the UAE is that it has become the most popular destination in the Arabian Peninsula for bird-watching tours originating in Europe during the winter months.
