Yemen's main port is the largest city of the Tihamah region.
It is a comparatively young city, but its oldest part can be found near the old market area, in the Turkish quarters. Many examples of old-style housing can be seen here, including a superb example with a domed roof, facing the Red Sea at al-Kurnish Street.
Visit the fish market alongside the Red Sea and view the traditional wooden boats still used by many fishermen.
